This is such a brilliant subject and one I love to write (and talk about) often. A huge part of preparing for birth is to believe, really believe, in yourself.
But to go about undoing a lifetime of not understanding or fearing birth is no easy goal.
It is much much more than learning some tools for birthing. You need to know how amazing your body is and, possibly the most important thing, that you can do it.
This is why Hypnobirthing is such a fantastic thing to do. You not only learn how you birth and your rights and options but also what you mind is doing.
You learn how you can create the space you need (no matter where you are), the support you need and how you can change your relationship with yourself. How your body and your mind can work together. How you can be empowered in any birth, to feel positive and confident.
So should I avoid birth stories?
Something that many women do out of the fear of…well the fear of birth itself is avoid any birth stories. They worry about the times when those stories are forced upon them in the news or in the line for the bank or by work colleagues. Those are often the negative or scary stories. These birth stories only serve to back up their belief.
That they can't do it.
What they miss out on is that yes there are negative and scary stories but there are as many (and if not more) stories filled with awe and strength and power. There are stories that are a mix of the two. And every one is as unique and individual as the mothers and babies that feature.
To believe that you can be a writer, or a footballer, or an actor etc what do you do? You listen to autobiographies or read articles about people achieving these dreams. Sometimes in a straight forward manner, sometimes against the odds. You feel inspired.
And that is why reading, watching or listening to positive birth stories is SO important. If you read enough (and understand birth and your body) even the negative ones don't make you feel so frightened as you know that all birth is different and you can believe in yourself.
You can find stories and films in our facebook group Calm Birth Kent and on the blog here on our website. We also always recommend that our course attendees find and attend a local Positive Birth Group.
If you feel you would benefit from a course with us or would just like to learn more then please email firstname.lastname@example.org and either myself (Sophie), Katy or Christy will answer your questions.
If you are already a Kent Hypnobirther and would like to share your story with our community then we would be so happy to hear from you! Love Sophie x
