When I became pregnant with my first baby in 2011 I was very keen on having a natural birth. However, like many first time mums, I had no idea how to achieve the birth I wanted. I went along to the standard antenatal classes and, while I learnt a lot about the drugs I didn't want to take, I was left with very little information on how to achieve the sort of birth I did want.
The birth I had was not what I had imagined (you can read all about it here) and I spent months (and subsequent years) trying to unpack exactly what had happened and how I could have done things differently. The answer I kept coming back to was hypnobirthing.
I became increasingly passionate about helping other families learn all I had learnt about birth - what a difference it would have made if I'd done my research before giving birth! So I decided to train as a hypnobirthing teacher and I can honestly say it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I truly love my job; it’s an amazing thing to spend time with people at such a special point in their lives. Helping them to feel equipped, prepared and excited for the day their baby is born is one of the most enjoyable ways I can think of to spend my time.
I'm now a mum of two boys, Stanley and Gus. Gus's birth was the birth I'd hoped for first time – drug free and in the water – and hypnobirthing made it possible. I'm also an accredited Breastfeeding Counsellor and very keen that Mums and Dads are supported throughout the antenatal and postnatal period.
